What is Violence; How Does Violence Affect Us

A. Welcome transparency up. Sign in.
B. Review Homework:
Media Log. Write on board. Share.
Give us your 2nd Review. Share 2 or 3.
C. View first example of media violence. (Batman on video clip reel)
Discuss. Was it funny? Was it violent? Why? How?
D. Facilitator reads: What Children Watch. (Use transparency)
E. Write on Board: "What is Violence?"
Break into groups of four, discuss and make a list of 10 different violent acts.
Groups report.
Compare to Violence transparency.
F. View remainder of examples of violence on video clip reel
Discuss. Do you or your friends ever watch programs like these (religious cartoon)
Do your younger siblings ever watch programs like this (Penguin cartoon)
Do your older brothers and sisters or parents? (Horror clip)
Ask. How does Violent Media Affect Us? Refer to transparency: "Ways in Which Media Violence Might Affect Us" for discussion.
G. What Would Happen If... Reality Check. Use hand-out.
Discuss in small groups
Report back to entire group.
H. Violence Score Card hand out.
Introduce sheet and how to use it.
Group may score commercials, cartoons, news, sitcoms, dramas, movies.
I. Homework Assignment: Volunteer reads assignments.

Write your 3rd Review about the program you watched when you were scoring it for violent content. Focus on violence acts you see. Use violence score card as an aid.
