"The subject was very sad and there were a lot of mean spirited people but Ruby was strong and wanted to learn more despite their prejudices." Teaches kids about equality in this country.
"Moved me to tears." A complex subject for this age, but explained well. Informs kids of the changes in this country over the years with a knowledge of segregation and integration. The abusive crowd scenes are a bit scary. Emphasis on religion.
In 1960, six-year-old Ruby scores well on her scholastic tests, and is chosen to be the first African American to integrate a local school. She is exposed to racism for the first time. With support of teachers and friends she becomes a moral inspiration.
