Younger children were not able to identify with the orphanage setting. They thought Shirley was too perfect, but enjoyed seeing her sing and dance. Girls liked it much more than boys did. They noticed there were no people from different cultures.
By today's standards, the story line is so unrealistic that even the children noticed it. However, Shirley is still adorable to watch, and the sisters' relationship is affectionate. Some empathized with being orphaned. Little cultural diversity.
Shirley Temple and Rochelle Hudson are orphans who adore the rich, young and handsome trustee of their orphanage. When he falls in love with Hudson, Temple plays matchmaker.
