Children politely watched but said they would not have selected it on their own. It was difficult to follow, and many got very restless. They liked the happy ending, compared the movie version to the book and asked questions about boarding schools.
Beautiful cinematography, wonderfully acted, and great script that is an accurate adaptation of the classic book. It offers complex messages about death, poverty and hope as well as a stunning female role model. Its fairy tale appeal is timeless. Its messages about compassion and friendship are enough to bring tears to your eyes. Some extreme images and issues - dead soldiers, Sara almost falls to her death, Sara's mother is dead, her Dad is presumed dead, and children are treated poorly - make this unsuitable for youngest viewers.
In Shirley Temple's first Technicolor musical, she goes from a snooty prep-schooler to a servant when her rich father dies. Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Song-and-dance routines with Arthur Treacher.
