Kids liked this even though they found it a scary. We recommend that you really consider the child before deciding to show the film to him or her. One child on our jury had nightmares afterwards. On the other hand, others absolutely loved it. Some were inspired to read the book. Kids enjoyed the vibrant characters. "James and the Giant Peach is a brilliant, creative movie for the whole family. This film has been one of my favorites since I was very young. I think one of the reasons I am so deeply fascinated with this movie is that it is extremely artistic. Like in the first couple of scenes when James is at his horrid aunt's house, the backgrounds and sets are so creative because they look like theater and stage props and it is interesting to see all the different mediums used in the visuals. My favorite character is the lovely Miss Spider, because she has so much compassion towards James even before he discovers the magic peach. I don't have a favorite scene because I am so in love with the entire film. This movie is for all ages because like I said before, it has been one of my favorites since I was very little. Over all I give James and the Giant Peach two thumbs up!! James and the Giant Peach is one of many classic family films offered by HDNet Movies at KidScene, on morning and Friday nights." - KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Raven Devanney.
Beautiful production that morphs live action characters into animated ones. It has a surreal feeling to it that transcends reality. Some scenes are quite Intense and not suitable for younger kids as they are a bit too frightening. Some nightmarish imagery, extremely cruel adults and violent fights between insects.
A literary, imaginative tale about a little boy who journeys to a wondrous city "where dreams come true." James lives a storybook life at the English seaside that quickly comes to an end when his parents are killed by a rhinoceros and he is sent to live with his two horrid aunts. He comes into a bit of magic which causes an enormous peach to grow in the garden. Venturing inside, he runs into a cacophony of new friends in the form of a spider, a ladybug and a centipede who help him escape. Voices by Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon, Jane Leeves, David Thewlis, Joanna Lumley. Directed by Henry Selick, based on the book by Roald Dahl, screenplay by Karey Kirkpatrick, Jonathan Roberts and Steve Bloom. Produced by Tim Burton and Denise Di Novi. Nominated for three Oscars.
