My Partner explores experiencing love in a new light. I like the overall story of this film, and I really enjoyed how this film tells a story, while simultaneously going in depth and teaching the audience about Hawaiian culture.

The storyline is about two high school seniors, Pili (Kaipo Dudoit) and Edmar (Jayron Munoz). They each have very different friend groups and experience some conflict when Pili and his friends catch Edmar and his group overfishing a native fish. Pili doesn't take overfishing lightly, which causes him to develop very negative views towards Edmar and his friends. The two boys are forced to work on a project together and, while this seems like a challenge at first, they both quickly learn that they aren't as different as they initially thought.

This film is cute; however, it falls short in many areas, such as the acting. The two strong performances in this film are from Kaipo Dudoit as Pili and Jayron Munoz as Edmar. These two work well together on the big screen and really convey the message and story of the film. I also really like how this film highlights a diverse cast of Filipinos and Hawaiians. Some scenes in this film get a bit long for me. One of my favorite parts of this film is how much I learned about Hawaiian culture. The project the boys are assigned to work on focuses on making a traditional dish that is typical of their culture. This film highlights old traditions and cultural aspects of Hawaiian culture which is very interesting and, not at all what I was expecting to resonate with. I also enjoyed the soundtrack and found it very fitting with the film.

The film's message is that love is found in unexpected places and is limitless. Be aware that it has quite a lot of profanity, which is why I recommend it for adults.

I give My Partner 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it for adults. You can watch My Partner on digital platforms beginning October 4, 2024.
