Night Owl offers a very artsy depiction of college life and how lack of sleep can affect your thought processes. This short film is more an exploration of filmmaking than a story.

A sleep deprived college student struggles with what's real as her nightmares leak into her decision making.

The storyline doesn't really inspire or educate. It seems more like a study on film production than telling a story. The sound effects by Parker Vanden Hoek are very good and definitely set the mood and ambiance. The sound contributes to the tension and eeriness in this short. Mia (Anther Oravec) seems very angry and frustrated due to her sleep deprivation and lack of accomplishment. The character development is shown through conversations with her subconscious (Maysun Cronk) and phone conversations with James (Jonathan Paul). The film is written and directed by Parker Vanden Hoek and you can see his interest in horror films. My favorite part is at the end when Mia awakens in the morning and starts to make changes to her life and direction.

The film's message is about evaluating your actions and making necessary changes.

I give Night Owl 3.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18. By Selene W., KIDS FIRST!
