The middle student produced short follows a boy investigating a fifty-year old arson charge to prove his grandfather's innocence. It becomes increasingly difficult because the boy is rejected by his new schoolmates.
This film is exceptionally well executed! I'm so impressed that it is made of middle school students. It's in black and white in a film noir style and really, makes you think. The acting by Micah Spradlin, Dylan Cooper and Micah Spradline is quite commendable. They all deliver performances that seem straight out of 1957! All the while, everyone is costumed in vintage clothing. Miller Brassfield directs and Molly Shatswell, together with OKCS Movie Academy write and produce. I love the use of lighting to add depth and intrigue and the camera positioning is excellent. Even the cut aways to images is well executed. The editing is also quite good as it moves the story along in a logical way and the background music is reminiscent of Perry Mason! I love the wail of the saxophone to build suspense. The big "reveal" at the end gives the film a well-deserved ending and resolution.
I give Detestable Things 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. By David E. and Julie S., KIDS FIRST!
