Drama Queen Salon is a short film made by middle school students about a hair salon for teens where the kids get ready for the school dance and get into each other's business.
I recommend Drama Queen Salon for the KIDS FIRST! Film Festival because it is a funny, family friendly short film where the cast is middle schoolers and mainly set in a hair salon for girls and boys. The opening clips of beauty product advertisements suffers a bit in that both the video and audio are poor quality - there is a lot of scratchiness in the audio. For the live action part, the camera work is okay - not great, but it works well enough to tell the story. It does tend to be a bit jumpy which makes it difficult to follow. I'm going to cut it some slack since it was made by middle school students. I appreciate that there are subtitles in this section because you often cannot tell what the kids are saying. The costumes are typical attire for middle school students. Some of the kids are masked, which is a key reminder that we are still experiencing remnants of the pandemic. The location in the hair salon looks like a typical hair salon. The background music kicks in at the end of the salon section and continues through the credits. There are a couple of cuts; I like the second one best, when all the kids are dancing in the gym. The way the film is made, all of the scenes are group scenes without any primary characters. The credits list a large number of people as cast members. There is a student lead director, Alina Luna. My favorite part is the plot twist at the end -- it is the funniest part.
The film's message is about how hair and make-up play a role in our lives - they have in the past and continue to do so today.
I give Drama Queen Salon 4.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 12, plus adults. Reviewed by Kira O., and Julie S., KIDS FIRST!
