The film begins as we follow two young people engaged in an intense game of Chinese Chess. The camerawork is great, especially the close-ups of their faces and hands and then an overhead shot of the game. As they get into an argument, it becomes physical and the entire game is spilled. Now what? The film is enhanced by a terrific musical score by Ezekiel Canaan, who is also the writer, director. The two cast members, Zilyn and Sheldon, carry their roles quite well. You can imagine them as two young college students that disagree about the game and its rules. I like that the film is subtitled in both Mandarin Chinese and English. I also like the camera work at the end, as our view retreats while the two begin their game anew.
The film's message is about rediscovering your cultural identify through a game of Chinese Chess.
I give The Right Move 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18, plus adults. By Julie S., KIDS FIRST!
