The storyline is a period piece (1700 / 1800?) about two kingdoms. One is ruled by an inexperienced King and his family. The other is ruled by a Queen and her daughter who have had bad luck her entire life. Two treacherous advisers are intent on taking over her kingdom and the situation has to be solved before time runs out.
You need to know that this feature film is from the Czeck Republic and the dialogue is in Czech, with English subtitles. The story is well constructed; it's clear how the two kingdom's rulers are both faced with challenges. The camerawork is exceptional; the audio is very clear; the subtitles are well done. The cast are all quite competent. The two actors that play the advisors to Queen Julia depict typical government officials that are willing to risk losing their job by abusing their power, which is something relatable in today's world. The one kingdom that is ruled by a king lacking experience in governing is also relatable. He's a wonderful father, but not so wonderful a ruler. The knight that works for the inexperienced ruler depicts a veteran knight that also carries a sense of humor. I enjoyed the background music, which is lighthearted and well placed. The sets and locations suit the story. The standout part is the castle, which appears suitable for a place where nobility lived during this time. The costume designer and production designer deserve credit for their outstanding work. My favorite part of the movie is when the two advisors to the queen for one of the kingdoms comes up with a plan to tax its citizens, which really brings the idea of corruption into the movie, where the people in power abused their positions to gain wealth.
The message of the film is that there is nothing too difficult in this world - as long as you put your mind to it, you can solve it.
Secrets Of An Old Gun 2 gets 5 out of 5 stars from me and I recommend it for ages 5 to 15, plus adults. I recommend this for children who have outgrown traditional animated fairytales and are looking for something that is more realistic and mature. By Tom W., KIDS FIRST!
