Even though the story is pretty basic, I enjoyed the film. I like the idea of animals trying to prevent what humans have done to the rainforest, and portraying that through a creature's eyes is very clever.
This film is a combination of live action and animation. The animated characters are cute. I especially like the frog and the bird the best. My favorite parts of the film are the live images of the rainforest; they are really beautiful. The sets are very well designed. The first set is an animated rainforest and is very realistic. The next set is my favorite. It shows a rainforest burning. The director smartly uses actual pictures of a rainforest, which makes this set come alive. The last set is a spaceship, which is pretty basic. The background music is well selected and provides a good auditory platform for the film. The theme song is terrific. It's well performed and captivating. I found myself humming it afterwards.
There are four animated characters - a frog, a monkey, a toucan and another frog. The voice over actors were well selected and have pretty amazing backgrounds, from Nikola Vucevic who is a NBA All Star with the Orlando Magic to Kerry Butler, a Broadway performer and Rickey Boyd, known for his work on Sesame Street and the Muppets. Rickey Boyd also directs the film and you can see his extensive background here as he delivers a fine film.
The message of the film is about the importance of saving the rainforest. I give Planet Blue - Journey to Eco 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 4 to 8, even younger kids might enjoy this visually. It has an important and timely message about the environment.
