Planeman is an animated short about a teenage superhero that has vowed to protect all modes of transportation. It is a very silly story that does not make a great deal of sense, but is simple and funny enough to be entertaining. In the beginning, we see people in the crowd saying "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Oh, it is a plane. No, look mommy! It's Planeman!!" This is a nice little nod to Superman. We get a minor flashback to what appears to be a group of teenagers residing in a trailer park and interacting. Jake, the protagonist, is getting irritated and uneasy that his friend is recklessly flying a toy plane. I like this because it is a small hint that Jake is Planeman before the inevitable transformation scene. It offers a different take on a superhero movie, which I enjoyed. The facial expressions on the characters are quite expressive and charming. Yes, it's silly, but children love superheroes and I believe they will enjoy this. The 2D animation is well executed, with excellent motion and interesting characters. There is some gender stereotyping when Melinda shows up, with her accentuated figure and calculated voice. The storyline jumps around a bit and I found it somewhat confusing, but I'm going to recommend it because I think it has many redeeming values. I recommend it for ages 8 to 12 and give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Reviewed by Rachael V., KIDS FIRST! Adult Juror.
Trailer parks, evil cats, and a newfangled crime-fighting superhero, Planeman who solemnly vows to defend all modes of transportation under his mighty wing. Remember wearing a seat belt and eating your vegetables is important kids, but not as important as defending all things vehicular.
