Intrigue, greed, jealousy, love and revenge permeate this made-for-PBS series from the creators of Downton Abby about life in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. The show focuses on three British women who voluntarily traveled from England to Jamestown to marry men they had never met but who paid for their voyage. As the three women, fiercely independent in their own ways, strive to create new lives for themselves despite challenging and often brutal circumstances, the plots twist and turn. Each episode is filled with uncertainty and machinations as all the characters struggle to survive in The New World, a place beautiful and bountiful but demanding hard work and with an air of unease due to the heavy hand of the settlers' law-keepers and their uncertain relationship with the Native Americans. The theme of women's roles in society should prove thought-provoking for many viewers. The sets and costumes are impressive, as is the writing and acting with every character, even minor ones, vividly portrayed. With each of the eight episodes running a quick-paced 45 minutes, the series makes for engrossing, binge-worthy viewing. Extras on the PBS Masterpiece Amazon channel and PBS Passport streaming service include several shorts about historic Jamestown and the making of the show. Recommended for ages 14 to 18 and older for mature material, including violent and bloody images. 4.5 out of 5 stars. Review by Mike F.
Taking viewers back to 1619 Jamestown, Virginia, Alice, Verity and Jocelyn are among the first women to arrive in the English colony. Duty bound to marry the three men who have paid for their passage to the New World, they have little idea of what the future holds or the disruption their arrival is about to bring. Twisting storylines follow the new arrivals as they make an immediate impact and are thrust into a new world of love, desire, power and survival. While love triangles, bitter rivalries and fierce competition cause conflict for the residents, ultimately they are bound together by their resolute will to survive and thrive in their new lives. The cast includes: Sophie Rundle, Niamh Walsh and Naomi Battrick as the leading female roles. The male leading roles include Max Beesley, Jason Flemyng, Kalani Queypo and Raoul Trujillo. From the producers of Downton Abbey. Written by Bill Gallagher (Lark Rise to Candleford, The Paradise), a new episode of the series will be available each Friday on PBS MASTERPIECE Amazon channel by subscription.
