Beautifully shot fairy tale set in charming interiors and natural locales. The live-action is combined with occasional, simply-drawn animated animals, which lend a storybook element and charm. The traditional fairy tale structure of "Once Upon a Time" to "The Moral of the Story" is told with well-performed narration and character portrayal, as if the storybook is being read out loud. While there are some goblins, they are more comical than frightening. Their fantastical costumes and makeup are inventive, colorful and fun. Kids will likely recognize some of their favorite fairy tale characters including Red Riding Hood and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The grandfather character is loving and tender, and the little boy is adorable and well-behaved. But like most little boys, he does disobey his grandfather and gets into trouble. Fortunately, he knows how get out of it using his wits and courage and so, the ending and message is a happy one. The cinematography is excellent, the musical soundtrack, almost like folk music, is upbeat, and the lighting is evocative and appropriate. Overall production quality is high. The film is in German with English subtitles. While I recommend it for ages 8 to 12, it may be suitable for younger children since the visuals are compelling and convey the story even without the subtitles. This makes a great addition to any film festival. Reviewed by Ann B., KIDS FIRST! Juror.
