FRENCH FOR KIDS: ON VA JOUER (LET'S PLAY)

Our younger kids who watched this took a bit of time to adjust to the "immersion" technique used in this DVD but, once they figured out that it was all in French, they were intrigued. They enjoyed the music, the characters, especially Fritzi the Mouse and the animation. Afterwards, we noticed that they were experimenting with some of the French words they had learned in the program. One kid didn't take to it but all the others did, especially one 4 year old who wanted to watch it several times after the first viewing. He said, "My Grandma speaks French so I know some of these words."

I enjoyed this DVD for the enthusiastic way Marie, the children, and the puppets presented each little French lesson. Not being a French speaker, I found it difficult to say some of the words, but I could get the gist of what she was saying through her actions, followed by those of the children. I believe that young children would need lots of adult support to help them pronounce and practice the basic vocabulary. The enclosed French-English pamphlet was very helpful particularly for making sense of some of her phrases. We know that nouns are the easiest words to learn in a new language, but putting them into simple sentences requires more instruction. This is a sweet, colorful production and the child actors in it will make all viewers smile as well as attempt to sing and dance along to the catchy music.
