Tanay Cavda is the school's chess champion. He has been playing since he was four. No one could beat him, even the person who taught him how to play. As a young child, he taught his best friend, Chavvi Sharma to play. When she shows up at the final tournament his confidence is like a roller coaster. When Tanay wins first place, he notices that something is missing - the fun. Tanay had to thank Chavvi when she brought back the fun to him and that is when Tanay realizes that life is not all about winning. The fun part of the journey to win first place or coming close to it is what is most enjoyable. The message of this film is one that many can benefit from. The friendship we see between the young people is powerful and darling. The chess language is accurate and not too confusing for a non-chess player. Nice production values. We had difficulties of this breaking up on some players. Be sure to test it before you play it at an event.
As two young talented chess players, a girl and a boy, sit across each other at the Grand Finals of a Chess Championship, a lot more seems to be at stake for one of them than simply the winning trophy. Checkmate is a complex tale of friendship, gender bias and competition. From India.
