Hugo is the thrilling story about Hugo Cabaret (Asa Butterfield), the orphan clockmaker, that with help from Isabelle Melies (Chloe Moretz), fixes an automaton that was created by magician and filmmaker George Melies (Ben Kingsley), based on the book The Invention of Hugo Caberet by Brian Selznick. I thought this movie was great, particularly the scenery which takes place in Paris. I also loved the soundtrack, which really helped set the mood. The acting was great, especially because Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz are only 13- and 14-years-old. They did a fantastic job. The only thing I didn't like was that the movie took place in Paris, but the people had English, not French, accents. I would recommend this film for ages seven and up because on some themes that may go above younger kids' heads. I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. Credit: Daniel Menegaz, age 14, KIDS FIRST! I wholeheartedly believe this to be a great film for children. The young characters in this film are curious, kind, self sufficient, intelligent, polite, and wise beyond their years. They drive the story forward and have to gather information oftentimes with the adult characters hindering their efforts. The moral dilemmas and the choices made by individual characters prove quite interesting. The plot, infused with the history of film, and directed to mimic a combination of early short films, keeps audience members attentive. Reviewed by Afra Siddiqui.
