Dan Masucci is a master at getting to the heart of human feelings, and this is no exception. A young boy and his dad have to learn to deal with the separation from the boy's mom, as she has been deployed to war. The boy feels left out and uncared for, though Dad is kind and encouraging. Sad that his mother chooses to privately correspond with his dad via email, in addition to her family correspondences by mail and web cam calls, so he decides to see what she is sending him. He reads her letter to his dad, and comes to understand that she too is having to deal with separation and fear. He also sees how much she loves them and wishes to be with them. It's a nicely told vignette of what many military families have to deal with.
Many American children struggle with having loved ones deployed to war. For ten-year-old James, the distance separating him from his mother becomes a lesson in sacrifice, and a test of courage as the Fourth of July approaches.
