CHILDREN'S FILM SOCIETY, INDIA
Beautifully shot, sometimes the images are sheer poetry in motion. Malek's issues are easily identifiable. She keeps screwing up but continues to dream of grandeur. The dialogue is sometimes in English and sometimes not but it is subtitled. I love the insight it offers into middle class Indian culture. Things such as the teacher's comment, "I want absolute discipline and compassion" show how the teacher / student relationship differs from what we know in the U.S. On the other hand, the relationship between family members and friends is so similar to what American kids experience. Truly a beautiful children's film.
Eleven-yr old Mahek dreams of becoming the very best in everything, but is unsure what she is best at. To complicate things further, an old, magic-less Modern Fairy walks into her life. Will Mahek ever realize her true strength?
