Young Tom Hobbs has high expectations for Christmas that are dashed when his pregnant mother is rushed into the hospital on Christmas Eve and he is packed off to an elderly Aunt he hardly knows. Aunt Em stopped bothering with Christmas years ago - no decorations, feast or presents. To lift Tom's spirits, she relates the legend of a magical Christmas tree in a nearby woods. Tom sets out to find it and is transported back 160 years where he experiences a fantastical Victorian Christmas, meets Father Christmas and discovers that the protagonist of his Aunt's story is himself.
