On April 26, 1986 the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant exploded, emitting 40 times the radiation than the bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. Later that same year and only 80 miles south in Kiev, Bogdana Aksyonov was born. The survivors of Chernobyl were relocated, many in Bogdana's neighborhood, but partly as result of the lack of public information available after the accident, they never talked about what happened. Today, at 19 years old, Bogdana is studying journalism- advocating for a free press and breaking the silence that still pervades her country.
