Offers very personal insight into the people of the San Juan Pueblo, their traditional dances, costumes, and beliefs.
Andrew Garcia of San Juan Pueblo contrasts his early struggles with alcohol, from which he almost died, with his subsequent life as cultural and addiction counselor, family head, and teacher of his pueblo's traditions, especially as embodied in its life-affirming dances. The film ranges over San Juan's dance plazas, fields, mountains and Rio Grande River; the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Albuquerque; the huge Gathering of Nations Powwow; Chimney Rock, Colorado with its ancient stone kiva; and Garcia's university class in Pueblo Social Dances. This film deals with serious issues such as addictions, the difficulty and importance of continuing cultural traditions, understanding non-mainstream heritage, without being graphic about the negative aspects.
