Annie tries to run away on a boat and almost drowns. Her grandpa covers for her. In the end, she realizes that running away is not so smart.
Sentimental story touches on family problems. Most girls would enjoy this. Good, if predictable plot. Good acting. The "old gang" makes it real. Best part is Grandpa's wisdom. Shows how older generations can help knit a family back together. Good messages about family, love, responsibility, growing up. Excellent sound and music. Addresses the dynamics behind running away.
Twelve-year-old Annie's first day of summer turns into a disaster when she learns her parents have decided to fly her to Hilton Head Island and to coerce her to spend half her summer with her 76-year-old Grandpa whom she hardly knows. Grandpa's "beautiful house on the beach" turns out to be a dilapidated dwelling filled with stored newspapers and dust with no computer, a pool full of brackish water. She is miserable and makes her plan to escape which turns out to be the decision of her lifetime, that she and her family will remember the rest of their lives.
