This delightful documentary addresses women's status in remote villages of China, with special attention to their access to basic education, and the struggles and conflicts that face families and schools. It is light-hearted and entertaining, while fully and truthfully depicting the livelihood, the culture as well as the pride and integrity of the local people. This charming film introduces the beautiful villages and people of the Leishan mountains to the outside world, and invokes provocative thoughts about women's role in a society in transition, which in many ways have parallels with women "pioneers" in any society. This film is a collaborative project between Christine Choy, an experienced independent film director/producer, and The Zigen Fund, a non-profit organization with 15 years of experience working on girls' education in rural China.
