This Macedonia series promotes inter-cultural understanding to encourage conflict prevention in a multicultural society and to impart specific conflict resolution skills that children can use in their everyday lives. In this story, Filis is the favorite grandchild of her grandfather. When he falls seriously ill, Filis's family doesn't want to tell her. She discovers her grandfather's illness, rushes to him, and learns a secret about his first love, Maria. He couldn't marry her because he was Turkish and she was Macedonian but he's secretly loved her all his life. He gives Filis a broache with Maria's picture. When he dies, Filis searches for Maria, returns her broach, and learns that she too had always loved her grandfather. Maria gives her seeds from the sunflowers that she and grandfather had kept as a symbol of their youthful love. Filis plants these seeds in their memory.
