"The Cat Returns" is a masterpiece directed by Hayao Miyazaki's associate, Hiroyuki Morita of Studio Ghibli. Before I saw the movie, I thought it looked pretty interesting because it is a movie that has to do with cats and humans. Two things that I like about the movie are, it has cats in it and the artwork is beautiful. By beautiful artwork, I mean the way the characters and the backgrounds looked are beautiful.
The animation is flawless, My favorite parts are when Haru starts to come across all these presents the King left her, and when Haru and the Baron are dancing.
The film is about a girl name Haru who has a boring normal school life, until one day she saves the life of an unusual cat. Then her life gets turned upside down. The Cat King rewards her with different presents, with one of them being her marrying the King's son! The only problem is Haru doesn't want to marry the King's son!
The main characters in this movie are Haru Yoshioka (Anne Hathaway), Baron Humber Von Gikkingen (Cary Elwes) and Muta (Peter Boyle). Some of the side characters are Toto (Elliott Gould),The cat king (Tim Curry) and Natoru (Andy Richter). The voice actors do a great job, It is fun hearing the American voice actors instead of the Japanese voice actors.
The message of this film is "Believe in yourself" which I think is a wonderful message. I recommend "The Cat Returns" to 8 - 18 years old, because both kids and teens (maybe even adults) will enjoy the story, the jokes and seeing the cute cats. However, there is some violence that involves battles with swords, spears and chains that may be too frightening for younger kids. I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. Reviewed by Tiffany, age 16.
