Hours into a five-year project to document families accepting public assistance, the fourteen-year-old high-achieving grandson of participant Dorothy Jackson is gunned down. This film captures the family's grief and disbelief, but is unflinching in following the vicious cycle that welfare had become for three generations. Lending shows young viewers the Real World in a way that MTV will never be able to. Generous funding for the National LEGACY Outreach Campaign is supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
