Webinar Descriptions

The KIDS FIRST! Film Critics program has been developed to help children become critical media users - and actively engage them in analyzing, critiquing and reviewing the latest films and DVDs as they are released. KIDS FIRST! offers workshops, both on-line and at selected partner venues where kids are taught

  • how to deconstruct a film and look for the messages it presents.
  • what elements should be included in their review.
  • how to videotape themselves for their on-camera review.
  • how to upload their review to the campaign's voting website.

These three 30 minute webinars are FREE and open to any child ages 7-14 who is interested in entering the 2013 KIDS FIRST! Film Critics Competition. Space is limited so register early.

To register, contact us here.

We highly recommend that you attend all three webinars. If you are unable to do so, watch the recorded ones at a later date. Also, we suggest that contestants take time to watch video reviews by current KIDS FIRST! Film Critics (available at kidsfirst.org) and to listen to our weekly radio show, KIDS FIRST! Coming Attractions (on Voice America Kids Network) to get a sense of what makes a good review.

How to Read a Film with Lauren Longworth

The KIDS FIRST! approach is different from some media literacy organizations that focus their attention on the impact of advertising rather than the content of films or TV shows that kids are watching. We like to engage kids in meaningful analysis and deconstruction of media, observe how characters relate to one another and ask deeper questions about the messages and meanings in media directed towards children.
