Welcome to KIDS FIRST!® NEWS. All articles are by Coalition for Quality Children's
Media unless otherwise noted.
Dear
Friends,
Last
week my family went to visit my in-laws up in northern NY. As you
can see on the left, my kids had a fantastic time playing in the
snow (one child is in the tree). We had a great week together, playing
lots of games and talking and doing crafts. The intergenerational
interaction is priceless. As I prepared this magazine, which highlights
PBS Preschool Destination, I realized that they are doing the same
thing. They are becoming more than the safe environment we can trust
for our children. PBS is also a valuable resource for parents and
grandparents. Their website
if full of activity ideas and games and general parenting tips.
For the educators among us, the site highlights the curriculum standards
their programs are based on. The site is interactive and dedicated
to pulling the generations together.
I hope you enjoy
reading about the preschool programming as much as I enjoyed talking
with Lori Holton Nash AKA Miss Lori, the first official host for
PBS KIDS Preschool Destination,
Angela C. Santomero,
creator of Blues Clues and co-founder and executive
producer of the award-winning childrens educational media
company, Out of the Blue, and Lesli Rotenberg, senior VP, PBS KIDS
about all PBS has to offer parents, children, caregivers, and educators.
As always, I
welcome your input. If you have comments on titles we have endorsed;
notices of media awards, publications, and products; or suggestions
for articles, please drop me a line.

Dear Friends,
I love this time of year. We've just finished selecting our films
for our second quarter festivals, and I have to tell you - it's
quite an exciting line up. From student productions such as the
claymation "The Adventures of the Clary Guy," to the
new "The Sandlot: Heading Home" starring Luke Perry.
Our favorite Native American producers have come out with a new
episode of Raven Tales called, "The Sea Wolf" that is
everything the first one was and more. A few of the wonderful
feature films that were released recently will be featured just
prior to their DVD release date including, "Night at the
Museum" starring Ben Stiller and Robin Williams and "Charlotte's
Web" starring Dakota Fanning and the voice of Julia Roberts
as Charlotte. We have some brilliant animated titles from some
indie producers such as "The Baseball Card Shop" and
"Blocks Car Derby" and a new feature from Monterey Media,
"Eye of the Dolphin." And, there are lots lots more.
For a complete list of films playing at a venue near you, please
visit www.kidsfirst.org/fest.
We've had
an exhausting time reviewing all the films that were submitted
to us this quarter, but it's a good exhaustion. I am first and
foremost, always delighted to see that independent producers are
hard at it as they turn in precious gems of live action, animation,
claymation films - short to feature length. Because our festival
is a traveling festival, we take submissions year-round and just
as we finish one quarter, we begin taking submissions for the
next. It really is a terrific way for indie producers to get their
films introduced to a wide variety of venues and audiences. Of
course, not every venue will play every film, but it's quite amazing
how many screenings they do get. For mainstream titles such as
"Barbie Fairytopia: The Magic of the Rainbow," there's
product recognition that will draw people to the venue because
they're familiar with it. For indie titles, it's a different story.
That's the beauty of KIDS FIRST!. Oftentimes, parents will show
up to see a title like "Jungle Book: Tikki Tikki Tavi to
the Rescue" because they know the title. Then, they'll stay
to see something like "She's a Dog" - a cute indie title
that's really about a guy and his dog.
I like to think that KIDS FIRST! provides films for kids that
they might not get to see otherwise, in addition to playing those
that they know and love, like "Shrek" and "Shrek
2," which we're featuring this spring in celebration of the
release of the new "Shrek 3."
Let me know
what you think. Have you found a special gem at one of our festivals?
Love,
Ranny

Rangers, brought to you by an Emmy & Oscar winning creative
team headed by Howard Kazanjian (Star Wars). Empowering safety information
is taught to children as they are entertained by the lovable animal

Groms:
Surf DVD. Almost entirely shot on the north shore of Oahu, the
film showcases extremely talented young surfers - tomorrow's pros. These groms range in ages from 11-16, so if you think you have seen
groms before, it is important for you to clear your thoughts, and
have an opportunity to really see these surfers take command of
the Northshore. Clay Marzo, a surfer from Maui, and coveted Governor's
Cup winner at the mere age of 15, is captured in the film surfing
Rockpile on a stormy intimidating day without fear! The film also
showcases: Granger Larsen, Bethany Hamilton, Alana Blanchard, Kiron
Jabour, Tyler Newton, Ezekial Lau, Evan Geiselman, Albee Layer,
Dylan Southworth and Ashley Hunter. KIDS FIRST!® Adult Juror
Comments: Great short surfer film, sure to be a hit with teens and
tweens. Nothing too thought provoking, just lots of shots of young
surfers. Beautiful blue water, blue skies, and effortless surfing. Anyone who's tried this sport will appreciate the difficulty and
the mastery of these kids. Avid surfers will likely recognize the
talent and will also appreciate their individual profiles. Includes
Bethany Hamilton, the young surfer who survived a shark attack in
2003. Good audio, good video. Shows well on big screen. DVD. L. 36 mins. El Porto Productions.

PBS Preschool Destination by Christine L. Pollock
Lori
Holton Nash is akin to many mothers around the world. She is very
busy with her three children, ages four, six, and nine. Packing
lunches and shuffling schedules for sports and school activities,
she balances play, parenting, and work. An interesting aspect in
Nashs life, though, is that when she heads off to work, she
joins a unique coworker -- an animated guinea pig named Hooper.
Thats right, Nash is Miss Lori, the first official host for
PBS KIDS Preschool Destination.
In its
debut month, September 2006, the on-air block catapulted the PBS KIDS series to the top of the kids charts. Curious George ranked
#1 nationally according to Nielsen Media Research with kids 2-5,
while other PBS shows joined it in the top ten slots.
This wasnt
a fluke. The team at PBS works hard to bring the public exactly
what they are looking for. They hit the streets asking parents and
educators what they found missing in childrens programming.
One of the top items was an adult who could act as a positive role
model for children. Miss Lori is a perfect fit with her radiant
smile and welcoming attitude. She genuinely loves children. In fact,
sometimes when she is on the set playing with the children during
breaks, the cameras start rolling to capture the natural joy that
surrounds
Miss Lori and the children.
Parents and
caregivers also wanted an interactive preschool environment. PBS
collaborated with Angela
C. Santomero, creator of Blues Clues and cofounder
and executive producer of the award-winning childrens educational
media company, Out of the Blue. Under Santomeros direction,
Miss Lori and Hooper deliver engaging new preschool lessons in the
second season, focusing on literacy, science, math and art through
age-appropriate topics.
As Santomero
points out, Our goal is to have children think and participate. What that means to me is that they are practicing the skills they
need. Santomero has a secret weapon she uses to figure out
timing. This successful woman joins her kids in front of the television
and speaks back to the screen herself. She also listens as children
in her household and in the local schools the PBS team visits weekly
interact with programming. She makes sure that in the PBS programming,
they have time to think about questions and give their own answers.
In
next seasons block, which begins, there will be more emphasis
on movement and music. Lesli Rotenberg, senior VP, PBS KIDS, says
the music will be diverse, showing a variety of styles from calypso
to country. Kids will have the opportunity to sing and dance to
music from all around the world. Miss Lori will lead them in a Simon
Says style in movement which, research proves, stimulates
different parts of the brain and creates smoother motor coordination.
Additionally,
to encourage more involvement, interactivity and creativity, new
on-air spots will invite kids to submit their own content for TV
and the Web on pbskids.org. Preschool
Destination is mulit-platform, taking parents and children from
TV to computer and to activities that dont involve monitors.
Every block has a theme described in detail on the website for parents.
The themes tie into the NY state curriculum to help children excel
in kindergarten readiness. The website offers interactive games,
which will be demonstrated by Hooper and Miss Lori, and book suggestions
from the American Library Association.
Nash sums up
the goal of Preschool Destination beautifully when she points out
that PBS echoes teaching and is there as a support for parents. Parents are the real voice. PBS can be their neighbor.
