* QUOTE OF THE MONTH
'When you see the Earth from space, you don't see any divisions of nation -
states there. This may be the symbol of the new mythology to come; this is the
country we will celebrate, and these are the people we are one with.' - Joseph
Campbell
Dear Friends,
You can't imagine the excitement around our office as the plans for this year's
KIDS FIRST! Film and Video Festival take shape. This year's festival promises
to be quite an incredible event and our festival partners are am impressive
group who promise to deliver to their communities a well orchestrated event,
above and beyond what we've been able to do in the past.
Because of the expanded interest in collaborating with us, the KIDS FIRST!
Film and Video Festival 2003 Fall / Q1 04 Tour will be touring to 20 cities
between September and the end of April next year. We are finalizing agreements
with our festival partners and will have a complete list of cities and dates
for you in next month's e-zine. You might also refer to our festival page on
our site, http://www.kidsfirstinternet.org/kidsfirst/html/filmfestival.htm
Although it is too late to submit programs for inclusion in this Fall's festival,
it is not too late to submit programs for inclusion in the spring line up. Our
next submission deadline is August 25. You pay apply online at http://www.kidsfirstinternet.org/kidsfirst/html/submit.htm.
KIDS FIRST! is also collaborating with The Smithsonian National Museum of the
American Indian (NMAI), the Center for Contemporary Art and Taos Talking Pictures,
to present a collection of children's films during their Native Showcase 2003,
a festival featuring the best in works by and about American Indians. The best
new and classic Native films will be showcased during Santa Fe Indian Market,
August 21-25.
Please note that our next Training Workshop for facilitators of our Junior
Film Critics Club will be held September 6 in Santa Fe. For more information
and to register, please go to http://www.kidsfirstinternet.org/kidsfirst/html/becju.htm.
We'd love to have you join us this September and start up your Junior Film Critics
Club this fall.
Last, I'm delighted to pass on to you good news re: Reading Rainbow. The official
word is that PBS has recently made a two year broadcast commitment and is providing
funding for renewal of the library and production of four to five new shows.
They are continuing to seek additional, major funders for the long term but
at least this boost keeps this fabulous, Emmy award-winning, literature-based
show alive. Congrats all!
Much love,
Ranny

FROM CONNECT FOR KIDS:
From Children Now - Dangers of Media Consolidation
In an effort to inform the FCC of the potential impact of modifying or eliminating
existing media ownership rules, Children Now released on May 21 a study that
shows a dramatic decrease in children's programming following a rise in media
consolidation. "Big Media, Little Kids" examines the impact of media
consolidation among major television stations in Los Angeles - the nation's
second largest city and media market--before and after the purchase of independent
stations by media giants that already owned stations in the city. A number of
Senators referred to the study in statements opposing the FCC's action. The
study was on the front page of the Los Angeles Times' business section and was
also covered by the Associated Press, Reuters, UPI, Communications Daily and
The Hollywood Reporter. http://www.childrennow.org/media/fcc-03/media-study-highlights-05-21-03.htm
Child Find Web Site: Finding and Assisting Kids with Special Needs Mounting
research affirms that the greatest window of opportunity to influence child
development is during the first years of life, so early identification of young
children with disabilities or developmental delays is critical. The Centers
for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service
Web site has information for parents and caregivers--and is looking for ideas
and resources that may help states or communities enhance the quality of their
identification systems and public awareness activities. Http://www.childfindidea.org/
Will Children Lose Out in Media Mergers?
New rules on media ownership approved by the Federal Communications Commission
will allow more media mergers and acquisitions. Norris Dickard, director of
public policy at the Benton Foundation, suggests children may be big losers
in a deregulated media marketplace.

I Won't Get Lost
With the highly publicized kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart and the passing of
the National Amber Alert Plan, keeping America's children safe is a top priority.
Now, more than ever, parents and teachers must arm their children with the information
they need to ensure their safety. CQCM's West Coast Outreach Director, Martha
Lambert, has written a wonderful new book, "I Won't Get Lost," ($15.99,
July 2003, HarperCollins Children's Books, Ages 3-7) which offers a fun story
with wonderful illustrations. It's the perfect tool for parents to talk to their
children about learning this important personal information without putting
it being in the context of something frightening to a child. For more information
on I Won't Get Lost or to schedule an interview with Martha Lambert, please
